about us

Gallica is nestled in the heart of Napa Valley amongst historic vineyards, coastal oaks, our gardens and olives. Heritage Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon are rooted in gravelly Cortina soils ambling off nearby Sulphur Creek. Our home is a handsome barn, contemporary and fresh, standing side by side with weathered vines.  We strive to practice lightly touching the land from the tending of our vines, thoughtful winemaking methods, to the simplicity of our packaging, Winemaker Rosemary Cakebread’s vision for a wine of her own, eventually called GALLICA, grew slowly.

Inspired by earlier work at prestigious properties in both Napa Valley and Bordeaux, wines  were made and a brand grew. The philosophy is a simple one: to craft elegant single vineyard wines farmed organically which accurately depict the site and the story of each unique vintage. GALLICA makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Albariño, Syrah and limited bottlings of estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. The brand symbol is a tribute to the ancient rose, their aromatics, and enhancement to winemaking. We love what we do and are fortunate to call Napa Valley home.

ORGANICALLY FARMED VINEYARDS

OAKILLE RANCH VINEYARD | NAPA VALLEY

Oakville Ranch Vineyard is located on the eastern hills of Napa Valley. Sitting on a sublime plateau at elevations ranging from 800-1400 feet above sea level (250-425 m), these red soils are visually distinct, volcanic in origin and moderately well drained. We have been making wines from this phenomenal terroir for over a decade. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are co-fermented to achieve the structure of claret, bright red fruit, with the elegant power of Oakville we look for in our wines. Aromatically explosive, layers of dark cherry, mandarin peel, and enticing floral notes keep us infatuated with this special place in Napa Valley. California Certified Organic Farming.

ROSSI RANCH | SONOMA VALLEY

Our one hundred percent Grenache is sourced from Rossi Ranch in the heart of Sonoma Valley. Owned by Sandy Otellini and farmed by Phil Coturri’s team, the fine clay loam soils, laced with light volcanic ash are perfect for growing this wondrously aromatic red grape. Notable for wild strawberry and nuanced with wooly thyme and wet stone, fermentation takes place in open top tanks. Burgundian in character and winemaking, with just enough stems to perfect elegant tannins. The soft ruby color is deceptive, there is grip and amplitude to these wines. California Certified Organic Farming.

RORICK HERITAGE VINEYARD | CALAVERAS COUNTY

Gallica’s only white wine is sourced from Rorick Heritage Vineyard located just outside of Murphys, California. Located north of Yosemite National Park in the Sierra foothills at 2000 ft. (607 m), this region tempted early pioneers with the promise of gold. These limestone rich soils produce a crisp and aromatic white wine that serves as a perfect companion in our otherwise red portfolio. Sustainably farmed by vintner Matthew Rorick, our dry white wine, while inspired by its southern European origin, is decidedly from California.

ESTATE VINEYARD | SAINT HELENA | NAPA VALLEY

Gallica is located on our family property in St. Helena. The deep and low fertility Cortina soils are renowned for exceptional quality red wines. Planted in 1990, these fully mature Cabernet Sauvignon vines produce wines which are elegant and harken back to the structure of Napa Valley red wines notable decades ago. So little is made, we reserve these few barrels for local auctions, and in coveted vintages, for our mailing list customers. From Gallica’s small estate planting of handsomely old vines, Petite Sirah ripens early on our Cortina well-drained soils. Petite is a misnomer for these muscular and confounding wines. Tannins are thick yet svelte with loads of aging potential. Desert sage, black licorice, peat, and plum skin fill the glass. Always the first red fruit harvested each season, we seek a balanced and elegant bottling. It is a rare opportunity to farm and lavish attention on vines over sixty years in age. Limited to what these vines produce, Petite Sirah is offered to our mailing list exclusively. California Certified Organic Farming.

Our Team

ROSEMARY CAKEBREAD | WINEMAKER & PROPRIETOR

Rosemary has earned her reputation for excellence quietly. She is known for making distinct wines notable for restraint and elegance. A graduate of University of California Davis’ Viticulture and Enology program, she was introduced to Cabernet Sauvignon at the historic Inglenook Vineyards. From early cellar jobs to a winemaking position with Spottswoode Vineyard and Winery, Rosemary has built her career around a love for wine. Her appreciation and interest in aromatics and blending was born from work with sparkling wine at Mumm Napa Valley. Of course, making wine also means logging hours and miles in the vineyard throughout the growing season. Rosemary can often be found where she most enjoys being- outdoors in the home vineyard or amongst the vines on the properties we are fortunate to collaborate with.

FRANCES STOCKTON | DIRECTOR OF SALES & MARKETING

Frances returned to Saint Helena after almost a decade of New York city life and adventure. A career in New York hospitality provided the perfect segue to wine. She is thrilled to share the Gallica story with you and continually learn from wine. When not at work, Frances can be found on the back of a horse.

KATY KEENAN | ADMINISTRATIVE

Napa native Katy has been in hospitality for fifteen years and the wine industry for eight. Childhood summers in Lake Tahoe led to a Sierra chapter after high school. Despite her love for the mountains she moved back to Napa and started to fall in love with wine. In her free time she’s cheering for her son at little league games, strapping his helmet on at dirt bike tracks, or finding new hiking trails with her golden retriever puppy.

NATE KANE | ESTATE VINEYARD MANAGER

Nate organically farms our estate vineyard of heritage Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. An essential part of our team that our vines are very grateful for.

Cabernet franc | red wine | OAKVILLE

Often overshadowed by its offspring, Cabernet Franc is beguiling. Always finicky, it favors and excels on well drained soils composed of rock and moderate clay which is exactly what this majestic Oakville Ranch Vineyard site offers. Planted on a gentle contour with southern exposure, the resulting wines are adorned with floral notes, a tension between savory, delicacy, and physicality which makes this coveted variety delicious and compelling. ESTATE Rosè | saint helena | napa valley

Our Estate Rosé is made the old fashioned way- whole clusters gently pressed to create the  pale salmon pink hue we love. This is a rosé made with intention from our own vineyards planted circa 1953 and 1990. We pick Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon from our organically farmed vineyard early to keep the finished wine delightfully dry, crisp and refreshing of older cooperage at cooler temperatures. Perfectly suited  to summer, it sings with white peach, blood orange, meadow flowers, and a whiff of dried lime peel.
